Most people think of chocolate as a sweet treat, which astrologers recognise as a classically Venereal substance with its associations of pleasure, indulgence, and romantic gifts.  But the tree Theobroma cacao, the source of the cocoa bean, has an ancient and venerable place in Mesoamerican mythology, with darker associations. It is a tree of the underworld, associated with the presence of ancestors in living human blood.  Cacao was used ritually to commune with the souls of the dead, attract good fortune, and seal contracts with the gods.  In this talk, Marcos Patchett explores the Mesoamerican mythology and star-lore associated with Cacao, and re-examines the astrological classification of chocolate.

Marcos Patchett is a Western medical herbalist, and a medical and horary astrologer.  He was the clinical supervisor for Middlesex University’s Western Herbal Medicine BSc & MSc courses from 2013-2018. He is currently an affiliate tutor for Kepler College (USA), QHP (UK), and the Academy of Astrology (UK, China and Taiwan).  His herbal medicine practice is based in Wood Green, north London. His first book, The Secret Life of Chocolate, is due for release in March 2020.
